How to write a winning healthcare awards nomination

Fountain pen, blank nomination paperwork, glasses and coffee on a desk in warm morning light

Most nominations that miss the shortlist are not weak candidates. They are strong candidates described weakly. Judges read dozens of entries in a sitting, and the ones that score well make the evidence easy to find.

Start with the outcome, not the biography

Open with the single result that best shows the nominee's impact: reduced waiting times, a new treatment pathway, a practice that doubled its NHS capacity, a business that created local jobs. Career history belongs later, and only where it explains the achievement.

Evidence every claim

  • Numbers with a baseline. "Cut did-not-attend rates from 14% to 6% in twelve months" is far stronger than "greatly improved attendance".
  • Independent voices. A short quote from a patient, colleague or commissioner carries more weight than self-description.
  • External validation. Audit results, CQC ratings, publications or press coverage all help the panel verify your claims.

Match the category criteria

Judges score against the published criteria for each category. Use the same headings in your statement so the panel can mark each section without searching. An innovation award needs a clear "before and after"; a leadership award needs evidence of a team that improved under the nominee.

Write for a judge who has ten minutes and no prior knowledge of your work.

Common mistakes

  1. Submitting the same text to several categories without tailoring it.
  2. Exceeding the word limit, or leaving half of it unused.
  3. Jargon and abbreviations the panel may not share.
  4. Missing the deadline for supporting documents.

Before you submit

Ask someone outside your specialty to read the entry. If they can explain in one sentence why the nominee should win, the panel will be able to as well.
